Job Posting: Community Initiative Coordinator (1-year grant funded)
RESPONSIBLE TO: Community Veterinary Services Manager
Reporting to the Community Veterinary Service Manager, this confidential part-time (20 hours per week) hourly position will involve planning, directing, and administering partnerships with community-based organizations in the Codman Square neighborhood of Dorchester, MA. These partnerships are intended to form the basis of mutual understanding about the link between animals and people and identify the conditions that cause animals to be surrendered or harmed and changes to improve the health of both animals and humans.
The Community Initiative Coordinator ensures that programs and services are aligned with ARL’s mission and strategic vision while determining which programmatic services are most needed in the community. Developing and maintaining collaborative relationships with community partners is a priority.
Once partnerships are developed, the Coordinator will be further responsible for identifying and promoting opportunities for new and/or enhanced programs and services according to ARL’s strategic initiatives. The position requires a high level of organization, professionalism and cultural competency. The ideal candidate will possess superior skills in the areas of communication, public speaking, and planning, along with knowledge and previous experience working in diverse urban environments.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- *Work with Community Veterinary Services to plan, develop, and implement programs and initiatives in the Codman Square community;
- *Establish trust and familiarity in the community by participating in community outreach events and activities, representing ARL, as appropriate, to community institutions/groups and the general public;
- *Define perceived problems impacting the community and provide feedback
- Partnerships with community organizations: Identify and define service gaps and barriers to improving animal health/welfare and motivate change within partnered organizations to recognize these problems;
- Community-based animal care services: Provide input and feedback on how to address areas of need though local organizations and the resources of ARL;
- Community-based Education: Coordinate local educational opportunities on how to care for animals and provide understanding on the links and similarities to humane health to further help people manage their own health and welfare;
- *Provide expertise and leadership in the planning, development, and management of new initiatives;
- *Organize community meetings, events and services;
- *Maintain clear and effective communication between initiative partners and ARL
- *Provide progress and new initiative status reports to the Community Veterinary Services Manager by measuring efforts and results;
- *Supervise and provide support for ARL volunteers actively working in the community on these initiatives;
- *Report any issues or perceived conflicts “in the field” to the Community Veterinary Services Manager promptly;
- Must complete a six month orientation and training period;
- Must maintain a good attendance record;
- Must have a car and be willing to travel to various locations;
- Must be willing, if required, to work flexible shifts during days, weekend hours;
- The above covers the most significant responsibilities of the position. However, it does not exclude other occasional duties, the inclusion of which would be in conformity with the position.
- Bachelor’s degree in Social Work or related field (preferred) or equivalent experience;
- Previous experience with animal welfare, preferred;
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a culturally diverse population;
- Previous experience in community outreach and knowledge of this geographic area, preferred;
- Ability to effectively handle challenging situations;
- Bilingual/bicultural background, preferred;
- Public speaking and written communications skills;
- Computer literacy, project management, problem evaluation and sound judgement skills;
- Must have a valid Massachusetts driver’s license, maintain a good driving record, and be insurable with the ARL’s automobile insurance carrier;
- Must maintain a caring, humane, and safety conscious demeanor;
- Must be able to lead with energy and enthusiasm.
