Our Sister Shelter - the Visakha Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
Through a one of a kind partnership, the Animal Rescue League (ARL) of Boston has established a “sister shelter” in South India - the Visakha Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (VSPCA) in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, India.
Visakhapatnam, located on the east coast of India near the Bay of Bengal, is one of the fastest growing cities in the region. In June 1996, a small group of animal lovers founded the Visakha SPCA to aid suffering animals, prevent cruelty and neglect, to protect wildlife and conduct humane education programs throughout the region. The Visakha SPCA also conducts extensive spay/neuter campaigns to curb dog and cat over- population, and provides rescue and ambulance services during natural disasters.
Dr. Bosmat Gal, the ARL of Boston’s director of International Programs, makes regular visits to the VSPCA to deliver supplies, funds, medicines and equipment donated by the ARL of Boston. She is also actively engaged in the training and professional development of the VSPCA’s veterinary and shelter staff.
