The Pops was created in 1885 as the “light classical” summer season venture of the Boston Symphony. The Boston Pops Orchestra reached its current iconic status during the 50-year tenure of the legendary Arthur Fiedler\, who was succeeded in 1980 by the equally renowned film composer John Williams. Keith Lockhart took the helm in 1995. It was Fiedler who started the tradition of Pops performances on the Charles River Esplanade\, including the annual Fourth of July celebration\, brought the Pops to television with Evening at Pops (1970-2004)\, and initiated Holiday Pops\, which marked its 50th anniversary in 2023. Fiedler welcomed to our stages dynamic\, world-class guest artists including Ella Fitzgerald\, Dizzy Gillespie\, Julia Child\, and Bob Hope. That tradition continues today with Keith Lockhart working with such stars as Brian Stokes Mitchell\, The B-52s\, Chaka Khan\, Nick Jonas\, and Rhiannon Giddens. With the Pops\, Keith has made 81 television shows\, led 45 national and 5 overseas tours\, led the Pops at several high-profile sporting events including the Super Bowl\, and recorded fourteen albums. Through it all the orchestra has remained of the most recorded\, familiar\, and beloved ensembles in the world today.

Chances are the answer is yes. Around 66% of U.S. homes include at least one companion animal—that’s 86.9 million households. These homes have included the White House\, which dogs\, cats\, horses\, goats\, birds\, rodents and reptiles have called home. Through objects\, photos\, letters\, recordings\, film and interactive display\, this exhibit looks at some of these animals and their presidential owners over the course of two and a half centuries\, when pets took on roles as workers\, companions\, trend setters and political tools. \nSome of the non-human occupants of the White House featured are: \n\nRebecca\, a raccoon sent by a supporter to the Coolidge White House for the president’s Thanksgiving dinner who became a pet instead\nLaddie Boy\, an airedale belonging to Warren G. Instead of a plastic bag\, the Tokens for Bags® program offers every customer who makes a purchase one “token” valued at five cents (the cost to produce a bag) to donate to one of several local charities selected by the store. The program has generated over $982\,840 for hundreds of local nonprofit organizations since 1994 and has saved over 19.65 million plastic bags from the landfill. Because of the major cell phone demand\, the Congo’s coltan mining business has increased rapidly in recent years. This has led to dramatic destruction of the natural habitat of great apes\, bringing this species closer to extinction. When recycled\, old electronics can have a major impact on the lives of gorillas. \nFrom April through September 1\, the Animal Rescue League of Boston’s (ARL) Animal Care & Adoption Centers in Boston\, Dedham\, and Brewster (Cape Cod) will help collect cell phones\, iPods\, iPads\, tablets\, adapters\, chargers\, earbuds\, and MP3 players.
