“Kindness uplifts the world” – Anna Harris Smith

Anna Harris Smith with dog

Our founder, Anna Harris Smith, believed that “the teaching of thoughtful kindness” was at the heart of caring for animals and strengthening communities. More than 100 years later, kindness remains the foundation of how we work – with each other, with the communities we serve, and with the animals entrusted to our care. We know we are stronger, more compassionate, and more effective when every person feels valued, included, and connected.

  1. Purpose and Scope

This policy is both a guide for our staff and volunteers, and a promise to the communities we support. It reflects our commitment to building a strong and vibrant culture of kindness in all of our interactions.

This policy is a living document, evolving as our people, our world, and our understanding grow.

  2. Guiding Principles of Kindness

    • Diversity: We value diversity and seek to increase itin all its forms as a source of strength, compassion, adaptability, and effectiveness.
    • Equity: We strive to ensure that everyone has equitable access to opportunities and resources, regardless of their background or circumstances, by identifying and removing barriers.
    • Accessibility: We work to make our workplace, programs, services, and communications welcoming and usable for all.
    • Inclusion: We work to make everyone feel welcome and respected by embracing diverse perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences.
    • Justice: We recognize that having law enforcement officers brings a power imbalance to our community work and are committed to addressing that with fairness and compassion.
  3. Our Commitments in Action

    • Recruit, hire, and promote fairly, striving for diverse candidate pools and equitable evaluation of talent.
    • Provide training and education on our guiding principles for staff, volunteers, and leadership.
