The Animal Rescue League of Boston Reminds Massachusetts Pet Owners to Include Pets in Emergency Plans

Hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30, and while Massachusetts may not experience hurricanes as frequently as other parts of the country, tropical storms and hurricanes can still produce high-speed winds, heavy rainfall, flooding, and power outages.

The Animal Rescue League of Boston (ARL) encourages Massachusetts pet owners to include their pets in hurricane preparedness and emergency planning before severe weather strikes. Having a pet emergency plan in place can help keep both people and animals safe during hurricanes, tropical storms, and other severe weather emergencies.

Build a Pet Emergency Supply Kit

Every pet in your household should have an emergency kit that can sustain them for at least one week. Your kit should include:

    • A one-week supply of food and water
    • Collapsible food and water dishes
    • Any medications and medical records
    • Current photographs and identification information
    • A leash, harness, crate, or carrier
    • Comfort items such as toys, blankets, and treats
    • Waste bags, litter and a litter box for cats

Identifying Pet-Friendly Emergency Options

If evacuation becomes necessary, not all emergency shelters or evacuation centers can accommodate pets. Identifying multiple pet-friendly options in advance can help reduce stress and save valuable time if a storm forces you to leave your home quickly and unexpectedly.

Before hurricane season begins, identify:

    • Pet-friendly hotels in your area
    • Boarding facilities that may be available during emergencies
    • Friends or family members who can temporarily house your pets
    • Local emergency shelters that accept animals

Ensure Your Pet Is Microchipped

A microchip is one of the simplest and most effective ways to be reunited with your pet if you become separated. If your pet is already microchipped, make sure all contact information is correct and up to date.

Create a Pet Emergency Support Network

Develop a buddy system with trusted friends, family members, or neighbors who can assist you with your pets if you are unable to return home or evacuate them yourself.

Help Pets Cope During Storms

Strong winds, heavy rain, thunder, lightning, and power outages can be frightening for many animals.
During severe weather:

    • Keep pets indoors and secure
    • Provide a quiet, comfortable space away from windows
    • Maintain normal routines when possible
    • Use treats and positive reinforcement to reward calm behavior
    • Monitor pets closely, as anxiety might cause them to attempt to escape
